Sport at Walvis Bay Primary School

At Walvis Bay Primary School, sport is more than just physical activity -
it’s a way of life. We believe that sport plays an integral role in developing
well-rounded learners, fostering teamwork, discipline and perseverance
while instilling a passion for a healthy lifestyle.
​
Our school embraces the spirit of competition and camaraderie, encouraging learners
to explore their potential both on and off the field. With a variety of sports on offer,
including athletics, rugby, netball, hockey, cricket and more, every learner has the
opportunity to shine and grow in their chosen discipline.

Our dedicated coaches and enthusiastic teams take pride in representing our school with determination and sportsmanship. We celebrate both effort and achievement, teaching our learners the value of resilience and fair play.

We participate in all NSSU school leagues and private school leagues within Erongo and Namibia - Cricket, Hockey, Netball, Rugby and all competitive leagues from u/9 – u/13.

Wynand Viljoen, Head of Sport
​
Mr. Viljoen, originally from Pretoria, relocated to Walvis Bay in 2018 after spending the first 35 years of his life in South Africa. He attended Glenstantia Primary School and matriculated from The Glen High School in 2000. During his school years, he was an avid sportsman, participating in cricket, football, athletics and swimming.
​
Post-matric, Mr. Viljoen continued playing cricket and football at various levels, earning provincial colors in cricket, football and netball. His passion for sport extended into coaching, where he has been actively involved since 2001. He has served on various executive bodies at a provincial level and has contributed significantly to school sports development.
​
Mr. Viljoen is a qualified CSA (Cricket South Africa) Level I coach and is currently pursuing his CSA Level II qualification. Additionally, he holds an IRB Rugby Level I accreditation, a SAFA D License, Namibia Athletics Officiating Level I, and an ASA Level I accreditation. His extensive experience includes refereeing and coaching teams at national tournaments in South Africa, as well as coaching across multiple sports codes at school, provincial, and national levels.

Currently, Mr. Viljoen is involved in Coaching under 15 Namibia Schools XI. His dedication and expertise in sport continue to inspire and develop young athletes across various disciplines.

Elvis Thomas, Assistant Head of Sport
Mr. Thomas, originally from Keetmanshoop, relocated to Walvis Bay in 2024. He attended Vaalgras Primary School and Keetmanshoop Primary School before matriculating from PK de Villiers Secondary School in 2004. During his school years, he was an outstanding sportsman, excelling in athletics (110m and 400m hurdles), hockey, tennis and volleyball.
​
As an under-17 and under-19 athlete, Mr. Thomas represented Namibia in the COSSASA and SADC under-17 Championships, competing in the 110m hurdles and 400m hurdles, respectively.
​
After matriculating, Mr. Thomas continued his athletic and tennis pursuits, earning a place on the TISAN team during his student years. His passion for sport naturally transitioned into coaching, where he has been actively involved since 2010, following his studies at the Windhoek College of Education.
​
Mr. Thomas has served on various NSSU executive bodies at the regional level and has made significant contributions to school sports development in the Karas and Hardap regions.
​
As a qualified Level I coach in hockey, tennis, badminton and athletics, Mr. Thomas brings extensive expertise to his coaching roles. His love for coaching lies in transferring skills to children and nurturing their potential.
​
Currently, Mr. Thomas is actively coaching tennis, hockey and athletics. He often quotes his personal motto: "To uproot hidden talents." His dedication and expertise continue to inspire and develop young athletes across various sports disciplines.
